Last summer in Ordino (Últim estiu a Ordino) is one of the most acclaimed novels by Andorran historian and writer Joan Peruga. It follows the life of Assumpta d’Areny-Plandolit, one of the daughters of Don Guillem d’Areny-Plandolit, one of the most important figures of Andorran history. The plot and the characters took shape thanks to the information contained in the correspondence between Assumpta and her brother Quimet. At the start of his novel, the author confesses that most of the characters, situations and descriptions have been imagined by him, although he would love his characters to be similar to their real counterparts.
Not all house museums are lucky enough to have two novels describing the history of the family that lived in them (the other one is El museu de l’elefant (“The museum of the elephant”), also by Joan Peruga).
Through the eyes of the protagonist, we discover the everyday life of an uncommon family, the Areny-Plandolits, as well as the transformations undergone by Andorra and the Pyrenees in the late 19th century, the economic crisis and the beginning of the collapse of the traditional ways of life. The Last summer in Ordino literary route traverses the many areas in the valley and the town of Ordino acting as the backdrop of the novel: the open hollow near the Any de la Part estate, the road of Riberamunt towards el Serrat, the maze-like old town, the great stately homes of the Rossells and Areny-Plandolits, the road of Segudet inside the woods of the Casamanya, the church of Sant Corneli i Sant Cebrià, with its small conjuratory presiding over the square...
The road is made of eight stops marked by a small plaque with a QR code linked with the website of the Comú of Ordino. The website contains information on the historical and cultural aspects of the various stops (along with graphic material), as well as the corresponding passages of the novel.
