The history of Hostal Valira goes back to the 1930s, when the monks of Montserrat promoted various buildings in Escaldes through a company called “Cultural Andorrana, SA”, with educational goals in mind as well as to manage thermal water resources: a garage (Garatge Valira), a school (Escola Meritxell) and a hotel – Hostal Valira, with its famous pergola.

Its quality makes it a relevant example of granite architecture, which is why it is protected. Furthermore, it was one of the oldest hotels and spa resorts in Andorra. It currently contains luxury apartments, as well as the Carmen Thyssen Andorra Museum.
