One of the most unknown facets of the Areny-Plandolit family is the link between some of its members and the world of magic; they even managed to become prominent connoisseurs in Spain and internationally throughout the early 20th century.

The main characters of this exhibition, Pau-Xavier d’Areny-Plandolit Plandolit and his son Xavier d’Areny-Plandolit Gassó, turned Ordino into the epicentre of the world of magic throughout their lives. Pau-Xavier was the author of Las maravillas de la magia moderna (“The wonders of modern magic”), which was published in 1913 and is considered to be one of the first sources of information in Spanish about magic in the modern era, as it contains important data on sleight of hand, cartomancy and parlour magic, as well as a compendium of stage illusions for theatres.

The structure of this book will be your guide as you discover this side of history throughout the 100 square meters of the Era del Roser exhibition hall, inaugurated in 2017 next to the Casa d’Areny-Plandolit and Postal Museums with the goal of hosting original patrimonial exhibitions.

The many objects of this exhibition – some of which were owned by our main characters, while others were the property of their contemporaries and have been gathered in Andorra, will show you what these shows were like at a time when magic was one of the most popular forms of entertainment, able to fill squares and theatres. You will also discover the role played by our main characters in a universe where nothing is as it seems, although what you will see in Ordino is most definitely real.
